Bestmile was selected to be a part of a team that will oversee the European Union’s AVENUE project to test autonomous vehicle use with public transit agencies in multiple European cities.

The €22M four-year project, called Autonomous Vehicles to Evolve to a New Urban Experience (AVENUE) will be led by the University of Geneva and features 16 partners including academic institutions, public transport operators, autonomous vehicle manufacturers, major technology R&D companies and specialized start-ups. The project is part of the EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme to promote projects focusing on smart energy systems and smart cities.
Bestmile’s Mobility Services Platform will be used to manage fleet services, enabling operators to plan routes and stops for fixed-routes and to match vehicles with travelers for on-demand services.

Bestmile’s Mobility Services Platform will be used to manage fleet services, enabling operators to plan routes and stops for fixed-routes and to match vehicles with travelers for on-demand services.

The AVENUE project will roll out in three phases beginning in underserved areas of European cities and will provide connectivity with public transit. Cities involved in the project include Geneva, Copenhagen, Lyon, Luxembourg, and three other cities to be named.

The goal of the project is “To pave the way for full scale introduction of disruptive door-to-door services and ‘mobility cloud’ strategies in urban transportation.”

Key objectives of the project include:

• Demonstrating on-demand public transport with fleets of 2-3 vehicles in each city
• Demonstrating AV shuttles in urban environments
• Eliminating the need for safety drivers in AVs
• Increasing the speed of vehicles and services
• The introduction of innovative services for passengers
• Exploring new models of AV buses
• Integrating with public transport systems

SHOW

Bestmile is a partner of the SHOW (SHared automation Operating models for Worldwide adoption) project, an Innovation and Networks Executive Agency project, funded through the European Union, aiming to support the migration path towards effective and persuasive sustainable urban transport. This is to be accomplished though deploying shared, connected, cooperative, electrified fleets of autonomous vehicles of all types and for all transport operators in both dedicated lanes and mixed traffic in a number of pilots across 20 European cities. The project pilots will last for 24 months, with real service and seamless operation in each pilot site lasting at least 12 months.

This holistic real life CCAV urban demonstration initiative is led by UITP and realised by a Consortium of 69 partners, 6 third parties and with the additional support of 60 stakeholders. Bestmile is one of the beneficiaries for the project, involved in the System Architecture & Tools work package. Bestmile will also orchestrate the DRT fleet of the Turin satellite pilot site and ensure the data flow management and integration with the hospital IT system.

The work will concentrate on the development of a common conceptual system architecture framework enabling the deployment of CCAV services, integrating with existing local transportation systems, managing the data repositories and proposing the required interfaces for the service supervision and management, data retrieval and data visualization.
